New Hobbies are Hard
As a kid, I was excited by the idea of growing up and having my own money to spend however I wanted to. Well, I am at that point in my life. I am an adult, a dad, a husband and I am fortunate enough to have a good paying job that allows me to the financial flexibility to get into new hobbies, such as photography.
While money and lack of authority impacted my ability 25-30 years ago, time is impacting my ability today. Finding the time to get into such a rich and deep hobby as photography is extremely hard. Between the kids, my wife, career and all round life, it is near impossible to prioritize learning photography.
That’s where this website and journey come into play - I am forcing myself to prioritize photography. Reading books, blogging, watching videos on Youtube, listening to podcast and simply forcing myself to bring my camera to as many places possible to ensure I am getting time behind the lens.
That’s the thing about many parts of life, it’s easy to get into a comfortable pattern that continues day in and day out. It’s important to force yourself to try new things, start new hobbies or change your pattern up every once in awhile. I know I benefited from doing so and I am confident you will too. With that being said, the easy part is making the decision to try something new, the hard part, is following through.
To ensure I am able to follow through, I’ve placed my camera in the main living space of my home, so it’s always available, always visible, always whispering ‘play with me’. While this may seem like a small and simple change, and it is, it has enabled me to bring my camera more places and take significantly more photos of life unfolding within my home.
I look forward to sharing more about my journey to become a mildly-OK adult onset photographer.
As always, thanks for reading,
